Taking 50 kindergarteners on a boat seems like a daunting excursion and convincing parents to let their children go with their teacher on a boat even more difficult task, however Franceil (Ms. Masi) did it. In fact, it was easy!! She raised the money, got a grant, and made sure no one got sick and even more importantly had a good time! Students actually saw four gray whales off the coast of Long Beach on the trip and enjoyed it tremendously.
Ms. Masi decides what her mission is and just goes after it. She teaches about the environment in her classroom and actually recruits parents to continue her environmental mission. This year she arranged a beach cleanup with parents on a Saturday on her own time.
She makes the kids care about their own world by writing letters, instilling empathy, reading Dear Mr. Blueberry and Hey Little Ant, and then goes for broke, making the parents fill out a carbon footprint and having her students write about how they can save the world.
It's amazing... and kids from her class year after year becomes the protectors of the environment. They will never forget that their teacher took them whale watching. Never!
